Personal Development at Red Kite Special Academy

We value and are committed to developing the whole child/young person during their time at Red Kite. The My World part of our curriculum ensures there is a focus on developing pupils' communication, personal, social and emotional skills and developing their independence and resilience with a focus on preparing them for adulthood.

We also focus on Personal Development through a range of planned events and celebrations across the year. These are carefully planned to ensure pupils have the opportunity to take part in and are exposed to a range of experiences, events and cultures for example ‘Hello Yellow’ Day which focuses on Mental Health.

We have established our own Red Kite Celebrating Difference Day where we wear a rainbow of colours to represent the range of special needs across our school, for example purple for Epilepsy, and we are joyous as we celebrate what makes us unique, different and special.

We also support others by participating in charity events during the year for example Children in Need.

    British Values at Red Kite:

We promote ‘British Values’ through our spiritual, moral, social and cultural education and the values we model and demonstrate to the pupils on a daily basis. British Values have been identified as:

Democracy:  The ability to understand and communicate are the most critical areas of learning.  We ensure that all pupils have a mode of communication so they have a voice. This could be using words, objects, photographs, pictures, symbols, communication aids, eye pointing or body language.   We empower our pupils by giving them opportunities to make choices about different aspects of school life. By valuing everyone’s voice and listening and responding, we demonstrate that we support democracy and liberty.

Rule of Law: We involve pupils in setting codes of behaviour and both support and help them to make positive choices and decisions. Pupils are supported to learn to regulate themselves and their behaviour and, as appropriate, take responsibility for their actions and for some pupils to understand the connection between actions and consequences.  Staff are committed to providing a consistent and predictable environment within the school built on positive relationships, developing the skills our pupils need to be successful both in school and in the community.

Individual Liberty: Pupils are encouraged to become good and valued citizens. We encourage and support all our pupils to become as independent as possible and prepare them for adulthood. We model and demonstrate that everyone has rights and this includes the right to say 'Yes' or 'No' to ideas or activities. Some pupils can take responsibility for particular roles and understand that a level of commitment comes with certain rights.

Mutual Respect:  We value and promote pupil’s inclusion in a variety of activities both in school and in the community. Our KS4 and 5 pupils take part in work experience both internally and externally. Within school, pupils encounter a range of people and interactions with others are always promoted and good manners modelled daily. Pupils have lots of opportunities to work with pupils and staff from other classes and opportunities to work with external companies and/or professionals that come into the school. The curriculum promotes both family and community involvement. There are a number of family events across the year and a range of trips into the community to promote community cohesion.

    Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)

RSE is a statutory aspect of the curriculum that all pupils will engage with at a suitable level to reflect their current understanding and skills.

Kingsley Learning Foundation Trust has a policy supporting RSE teaching across the two Trust schools (Kingsley Special Academy and Red Kite Special Academy) and as such covers provision for both primary and secondary aged pupils.

The RSE curriculum, alongside our PHSE provision should enable pupils to become healthier, more independent and more responsible members of the wider community, offering skills to live in our diverse and multicultural society. Pupils are encouraged to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school, the wider community, keeping safe and recognising their rights and responsibilities within these settings.

At Kingsley Learning Foundation Trust schools, we strive to provide differentiated, adapted teaching to suit the understanding of our pupils to ensure that learning is reflective of their needs.

The policy found within our designated policy area of the website provides guidance for staff, guardians and others. The policy was open for consultation with stakeholders in March/April 2024. Please address any further queries or comments to nikki.bowskill@redkite.school.
